KYBELLA® uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that helps break down and absorb fat. When injected into the fatty tissue beneath the chin, KYBELLA disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the cells to be destroyed and gradually eliminated by the body’s natural metabolic process. Before your first KYBELLA® session at Woodlands Medical Aesthetics Institute, you’ll meet with Dr. Johnny Peet or one of our expert providers for a customized consultation. We will evaluate the fat beneath your chin and map out the treatment area. For best results, avoid alcohol, NSAIDs, and supplements that thin the blood for at least 48 hours before your appointment. These steps help minimize bruising and swelling after treatment.
Each KYBELLA® session begins with the treatment area being cleansed and possibly numbed with topical anesthetic or ice. Your provider will then use a fine needle to deliver a series of injections under your chin, precisely targeting the fat cells. You may feel a light burning or stinging sensation that lasts only a few minutes. The entire process takes about 15 to 20 minutes, making it easy to fit into your day with minimal disruption.
After KYBELLA® treatment, it’s normal to experience swelling, firmness, bruising, or tenderness in the injection area. Swelling tends to be most pronounced after the first session and can last from a few days to a couple of weeks. You can return to daily activities immediately, though you may want to plan around social events. Results develop gradually as your body metabolizes the destroyed fat cells, with optimal improvements visible after a series of sessions.

Your KYBELLA treatment will take place during a quick visit to our office. The process typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Your experienced injector will deliver a series of injections into the fat under your chin at each treatment session. After treatment, you can apply ice or a cold pack to the treatment area for 10 to 15 minutes, as needed.
Before your treatment, your provider may apply ice, a topical anesthetic, or an injectable local anesthetic to keep you comfortable from start to finish. He or she may also suggest you take an over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment.
Your provider will help you determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. To see your best results, you may need up to 6 treatments, spaced no less than 1 month apart.
For most people, the first treatment session involves the most downtime. You’ll be free to resume your normal daily activities but are likely to have swelling for a couple of weeks, so keep your social plans and work commitments in mind when scheduling your treatment.
In some rare cases, KYBELLA can cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness (experienced by 4 out of 100 people in clinical studies) and trouble swallowing (experienced by 2 out of 100 people in clinical studies).

Tell your provider if you plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin; have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin; have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if KYBELLA will harm your unborn baby); or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if KYBELLA passes into your breast milk; talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby if you receive KYBELLA).
In clinical studies, 79% of people treated with KYBELLA had improved satisfaction with the appearance of the area beneath their chin (compared with 34% of people treated with placebo) 12 weeks after the last treatment.
KYBELLA patients reported improvement in the visual and emotional impact of submental fat when asked how happy, bothered, self-conscious, embarrassed, old, and overweight they felt about the amount of their submental fat after receiving treatment.
KYBELLA® is specifically FDA-approved for treating moderate to severe fat below the chin, known as submental fullness.
To get the most out of your treatment, avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil for a couple of days before your session. These can increase the risk of bruising.
During treatment, you might feel a slight stinging or warm sensation as the solution is injected. Afterward, expect temporary swelling and mild soreness, especially after your first session. Swelling is a typical response as your body begins breaking down the treated fat cells.
Once fat cells are destroyed by KYBELLA®, they do not return. Most patients do not require maintenance as long as they maintain their weight.
You can return to normal activities immediately, but visible swelling may last several days, especially after your first session.
